This question was asked in a group I belong too. My rather lengthy answer is below I thought it might be useful for you so I’ve posted it here.
Question
Has anyone here changed or moved away from a business, niche, or industry? I’m making a move and am SO SCARED. Would love to hear your story and what you did to overcome fear, doubt, and “what ifs”. Thank you so much!
Answer
Oooh I know that feeling and it’s the quickest route to inaction for me and that just makes it worse.
I’m a serial changer. I’ve changed careers, industries, developed new niches often. Recently I even moved across the world. No matter how many times I do it’s still so scary.
How I manage the fear
- Treat every new thing like an experiment or trial project or an adventure.
- Reminding myself that the reality is that I have no idea what will work and what won’t till i try it.
- While it’s great having a goal or a fixed outcome, knowing that there are hundreds of ways things can turn out that will be just as good or even better than i can imagine is both calming and exciting.
- The other thing that has been helpful for me is to realise that it’s perfectly reasonable to be scared and uncomfortable it’s what we as humans are meant to feel when we embark on the unknown, it’s part of our survival mechanism and it often means we are growing.
- I now find it easier to accept the discomfort and go with it, remind myself I’m totally safe right now.
- Take the next step forward do the next task
- Make taking action or doing the next task a success measure
- Keeping things small and manageable
- Have the odd melt down, freak out and panic it’s normal.
- Having People around to remind you that you are cool whatever happens is crucial.
What about you what do you do when you’re in the middle of a big change.
How do you deal with the fear factor?
